ANSI Danger: Pinch Point! Keep Hands Clear

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212, the General Requirements for All Machines standard, requires employers to provide guarding at all ingoing nip points, gear sets, chain and sprocket assemblies, and roller mechanisms where pinch point hazards exist. Employers working within this framework commonly post pinch point signs at the identified hazard location to reinforce operator awareness as part of their machine guarding program. The sign supports the employer's hazard communication effort but does not replace the physical guarding required by the standard.

A pinch point sign should be posted directly on the machine at or adjacent to the location where the pinch hazard exists, such as near gear sets, roller assemblies, belt and pulley drives, or chain and sprocket mechanisms. The sign should be visible to the operator from their normal working position before their hands would reach the hazard zone. For machines with multiple pinch points, each hazard location should be individually marked with a sign.

The appropriate signal word depends on the severity and probability of injury. Danger is used when the pinch point presents an immediate risk of severe injury such as from an unguarded gear nip or roller nip running at high force. Warning is appropriate when the risk is serious but the energy level or exposure is somewhat lower. ANSI Z535.4 (Product Safety Signs and Labels) provides the framework for signal word selection, and the specific machine energy level and exposure frequency should guide the choice.

Bilingual safety signs in English and Spanish support the employer's hazard communication program for workplaces where workers have limited English proficiency. OSHA has a longstanding requirement that employers communicate safety information in a language their workers can understand, which applies to on-machine hazard warnings. A bilingual pinch point sign provides a persistent visual reminder at the machine itself and works alongside formal employee training as part of the employer's broader hazard communication program.

A pinch point sign is not a substitute for a physical machine guard. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 requires physical guarding as the primary control at points of operation and ingoing nip points wherever it is feasible. Signs are a supplemental hazard communication tool that informs operators of residual risks that cannot be fully eliminated by guards alone, or that exist during maintenance activities when guards are temporarily removed. Employers should install and maintain all required physical guards and use signage as an additional layer of protection.
