What makes a Machine Danger sign different from a warning sign?

A Machine Danger sign is different from a warning sign because the word DANGER is used for very serious situations where you can get severely injured or even die if you come into contact with the hazard. A Machine Danger sign is specific to a machine and tells workers how a machine can harm them if they are not careful with it.

Which machines typically need these Machine Danger signs?

Machines that can cause fatal injuries must have these signs. This includes presses, stamping equipment, CNC machines, lathes, conveyors, robotic arms, voltage electrical equipment and hydraulic systems. If a machine can kill or permanently injure someone, then a DANGER-level sign is necessary for that machine.

Where on the machine should these Machine Danger signs be placed?

These signs should be placed as close to the hazard point as possible and in the line of sight from the approach direction. Typically these signs are placed on control panels, access doors, maintenance points and machine frames near moving parts of the machine.

What OSHA standards apply to Machine Danger signs?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 covers the specifications for accident-prevention signs and tags. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.212 covers machine guarding requirements. For machines involving energy, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147 on lockout/tagout also applies to these Machine Danger signs.

Do Machine Danger signs replace guards or safety interlocks?

No. Machine Danger signs do not replace guards or safety interlocks. The Machine Danger signs communicate the hazard while guards and interlocks physically prevent contact with the hazard. Both are necessary. Neither can substitute for the other.

Can these Machine Danger signs be applied to older machines that did not come with labels from the manufacturer?

Yes, these Machine Danger signs can be applied to machines. Original machine labels may wear off or fade, were never adequate to begin with. Retrofit equipment with the danger labels using adhesive vinyl signs.

Will they hold on surfaces with oil, vibration or heat?

The vinyl adhesive is designed for machine surfaces and can handle the conditions typical in a manufacturing environment. It is best to clean the surface before applying the sign especially if there is any oil or residue present, on the machine.

What size options are available?

The signs come in different sizes. Some common sizes for hazard signs are 3.5" x 5", 5" x 7", 7" x 10", 10" x 14" These sizes ensure that the signs are visible and easy to read. These signs need to be big enough to grab people's attention and small enough to fit in the space available.
