What does a High Voltage sign tell workers?
That the equipment or area contains systems operating at voltages high enough to cause serious injury or death on contact. The term "voltage" in an industrial safety context generally refers to systems above 600 volts though even lower voltages can be fatal depending on the circumstances. The sign tells workers to treat whatever is behind it as something that can kill.
Where are High Voltage signs commonly needed?
On transformer enclosures and pad-mounted equipment at substation fencing and gates on voltage switchgear and motor control centres, on utility poles at accessible heights, on electrical vaults and manholes, on the exterior of high-voltage rooms and on any equipment or enclosure that houses conductors or components energised at dangerous voltage levels.
Does OSHA require High Voltage signs specifically?
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.303(f) requires that electrical equipment be marked with the voltage, wattage or other ratings necessary for safe use. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.303(g) requires guarding of parts operating at 50 volts or more. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 covers accident-prevention signs and tags. NFPA 70E and NFPA 70 (National Electrical Code) also reference voltage identification requirements for equipment.
Should High Voltage signs specify the voltage?
Yes, where the voltage is known and consistent. "Danger: 4160V" gives an electrician or emergency responder actionable information. A generic "High Voltage" sign communicates the hazard category but leaves out information that can meaningfully affect how someone responds to the situation.
Can High Voltage signs be posted on equipment that is sometimes de-energized?
Yes. Equipment that is de-energized during maintenance can be re-energized at any time unless it is properly locked out. A permanent High Voltage sign on the equipment communicates the standing hazard regardless of whether the equipment happens to be off at that moment.
Are these signs suitable for outdoor substations and utility equipment?
Yes. The waterproof vinyl holds up to conditions including UV exposure, rain, wind and temperature changes without fading or the adhesive failing. Outdoor electrical infrastructure is one of the common applications for high-voltage warning signs.
How large should a High Voltage sign be?
Large to be read clearly from a safe approach distance. For substations and high-voltage rooms, larger-format signs that are readable from several feet away are the right choice. For individual equipment labels inside a room, a standard label size works. The key is that the warning is visible before someone gets within reach of the hazard.
