FAQ's
What are fire equipment signs used for?
Fire equipment signs identify the location of fire suppression and response equipment in a building. They tell workers and emergency responders exactly where to find fire extinguishers, hoses, pull stations, sprinkler shutoffs, and similar equipment when seconds are not something you can afford to waste.
Where should fire equipment signs be posted?
Above or adjacent to each piece of fire equipment at a height visible from a reasonable distance. Extinguisher signs go above the extinguisher itself. Hose cabinet signs go on or above the cabinet. The goal is that someone unfamiliar with the building can find equipment quickly without having to search.
Are fire equipment signs required by law?
Yes. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.157 requires that portable fire extinguishers be visibly marked with signs where the extinguisher may not be immediately apparent. NFPA 10, the standard for portable fire extinguishers, also requires identification signage.
At what height should fire equipment signs be mounted?
OSHA recommends that extinguisher signs be mounted so the top of the extinguisher is between 3.5 and 5 feet from the floor. The sign itself should be visible above any obstructions that could block the view at floor level. For large areas, signs may need to be suspended from the ceiling for visibility across the space.
Do fire equipment signs need to meet a format?
They should be clearly visible use colors (red is the recognized color for fire protection equipment) and be legible from a reasonable approach distance. Following ANSI Z535 formatting standards for words and layout is widely recommended.
How often should fire equipment signs be inspected?
Include them in your fire safety inspections. A faded, damaged or obstructed sign is not doing its job. If equipment is relocated, the sign needs to move with it or be updated to point to the location.
Are these signs waterproof?
Yes. StickerJet fire equipment signs are made of vinyl suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, including areas prone to moisture.
