Why do electrical panels specifically need their signs?

Because they are one of the most common points where electrical incidents happen. Panels get opened regularly for maintenance, troubleshooting and circuit additions. Not everyone who opens one is an electrician and even qualified workers benefit from clear hazard identification right at the point of access. The sign closes the gap between what someone assumes is safe and what is actually energized behind the door.

What types of signs are commonly needed on panels?

Danger or warning signs identifying the shock and arc flash hazard, authorized personnel-only notices, PPE requirement reminders, lockout/tagout instructions and circuit directory labels are all commonly used on or near panels. For panels above voltage thresholds, arc flash hazard labels with incident energy data are also required under NFPA 70E.

Where exactly should panel signs be placed?

On the panel door exterior so the sign is visible before the door is opened, on the interior of the door for warnings visible to someone working inside, and on the wall adjacent to the panel for access restriction and PPE notices. Placement should be such that the critical warning is seen before anyone reaches for the latch.

What OSHA and NFPA standards apply?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.303 covers electrical equipment identification and marking. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.333 covers work practices around energized electrical equipment. NFPA 70E sets the standard for arc flash hazard labeling on equipment, including panels. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 covers accident-prevention signs and tags.

Do electrical panel signs need to include arc flash information?

For panels where arc flash is a credible hazard, NFPA 70E recommends labels that include incident energy level, arc flash boundary, working distance, and required PPE. That data should come from an arc flash study. A general electrical hazard warning label is a starting point. It does not satisfy the full NFPA 70E labeling requirement for higher-energy panels.

Our panels are in a room that gets dusty and humid. Will the signs hold up?

Yes. The waterproof vinyl handles humidity, dust, and the mild chemical exposure common in electrical rooms without peeling, bubbling or the print degrading. For panels in harsh environments, clean the surface before applying to get a strong initial bond.

Can these signs be used on residential panels as well as commercial and industrial ones?

Yes. Residential electrical panels, in rental properties, workshops and garages with high-powered equipment, benefit from clear hazard identification just as commercial ones do.
