What hazards do battery storage signs cover?

Charging batteries produce hydrogen gas, which builds up to explosive concentrations in a poorly ventilated space. Batteries also contain corrosive electrolytes and present electrical shock risks, and lithium-based batteries carry a thermal runaway and fire risk. A battery storage sign is communicating a combination of hazards.

Who needs these signs?

Any facility that stores or charges batteries. Warehouses with forklift fleets, facilities with vehicles, data centers with UPS battery banks, solar installations with battery storage and manufacturing plants with battery-powered equipment are all common applications.

Where should these be posted?

At the entrance to the battery charging and storage room on charging equipment, near battery rack systems, at the eyewash station, in the charging area and on ventilation equipment.

What OSHA standards apply to battery storage areas?

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178 on powered industrial trucks includes specific requirements for battery charging areas including ventilation and fire protection. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.305 covers electrical wiring in battery rooms. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151 covers first aid requirements relevant to acid exposure risk. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 covers accident-prevention signs and tags.

Are these signs relevant for lithium-ion batteries specifically?

Yes, and the lithium-ion batteries are something to be taken seriously. Thermal runaway in lithium-ion batteries produces a different fire behavior than lead-acid batteries, and the emergency response differs too. Signs in lithium-ion storage areas should reflect those specific hazards and any facility-specific response instructions for that battery type.

Should these signs include PPE requirements?

Yes. Chemical splash goggles and acid-resistant gloves are standard for lead-acid battery areas. Adding the PPE requirement directly to the sign means workers do not have to remember to check a separate notice before entering.

Should battery storage areas also have no smoking and no open flame signs posted?

Absolutely. Hydrogen gas, from charging creates an ignition risk. No smoking, no flame and no sparks signage should go up alongside battery storage warnings. The two work together to address the flammability hazard that the charging process creates.

What size options are available?

The signs come in different sizes. Some common sizes for hazard signs are 3.5" x 5", 5" x 7", 7" x 10", 10" x 14" These sizes ensure that the signs are visible and easy to read. These signs need to be big enough to grab people's attention and small enough to fit in the space available.
