What exactly is an arc flash, and why does it need its own sign?

Arc flash is a violent release of electrical energy caused by a fault in energized equipment. The burst of heat, light, pressure and molten metal it produces can cause burns in a fraction of a second. A sign that specifically names arc flash tells workers that this is not an electrical hazard; it is one of the most dangerous situations in an industrial workplace.

How is a welding arc hazard different from arc flash?

Arc flash is uncontrolled and explosive. A welding arc is a controlled arc used in welding operations. It still emits intense UV and infrared radiation that can cause arc eye, skin burns and long-term eye damage. Welding arc signs protect both the welder and anyone passing nearby who might accidentally look at the arc without eye protection.

Where should arc flash signs be posted?

On panels, switchgear, motor control centers, transformers and any energized equipment where an arc flash hazard has been identified. NFPA 70E recommends these labels be in place before any work is performed near parts.

Where should welding arc signs be posted?

At welding bay entrances, on curtain and screen boundaries separating welding from other work areas, and anywhere welding is regularly performed near foot traffic. The sign needs to catch someone before they are in line of sight of the arc, not after they have already looked at it.

What standards govern arc flash labeling and welding arc hazard communication?

NFPA 70E is the primary reference for arc flash hazard identification, PPE selection, and equipment labeling. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.333 covers electrical safe work practices. Should arc flash labels include incident energy data?

Equipment-level arc flash labels should include arc flash boundary, incident energy, working distance, and required PPE category per NFPA 70E. That detail comes from a formal arc flash study. Area-level signs communicate the general hazard and direct workers to follow safe work practices before approaching any energized equipment.
