What is the DANGER signal word reserved for?

DANGER is the severity signal word in the ANSI Z535 system. DANGER is used when a hazardous situation will cause injury or death if people do not listen to the warning.

What makes a DANGER label different from a WARNING or CAUTION label? 

The difference is severity. DANGER is for hazards that are immediately life‑threatening. WARNING is for hazards that could cause injury. CAUTION is for hazards that are likely to cause only minor or moderate injury.

What types of hazards typically use DANGER labels?

DANGER labels are used on high‑voltage equipment, on storage of toxic chemicals, on moving machinery that could cause fatal injury on fall hazards from great heights, on explosive or highly flammable substances and on any situation where touching the hazard without protection will likely kill or seriously hurt someone.

Which OSHA standard covers DANGER labels? 

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 defines the rules for accident‑prevention signs and tags. The standard ANSI Z535.4 covers how to design product safety signs and labels.

Can DANGER labels be used on equipment that's only sometimes dangerous? 

Yes. A machine that is safe while it runs but becomes dangerous when it is being serviced still needs a DANGER label at the place where the danger appears. The label tells people about the hazard that exists under conditions not just when the machine is running all the time.
