Why do acids need a dedicated sign rather than a general chemical warning?
The risk profile of acids is quite high. Even a little contact with concentrated acids can cause permanent tissue damage, and certain acids release toxic fumes that affect anyone in the vicinity. Knowing it is an acid, not just "a chemical," tells workers what PPE they need and what the emergency response looks like.
What facilities most commonly need acid warning signs?
Metal finishing and electroplating shops, battery manufacturing and storage facilities, water treatment plants, chemical plants, labs, semiconductor fabrication facilities, and agricultural operations using acidic treatments. Anywhere acids are stored, diluted, dispensed, or used in a process.
Where should these be posted?
On storage cabinets, drums, and carboys; at acid room entrances; near dispensing and dilution stations; on process piping carrying acid; and near emergency eyewash and shower stations in acid-handling areas.
What OSHA standards apply to these signs?
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1200 covers corrosive chemicals under the Hazard Communication Standard. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.151 covers first aid requirements, which is directly relevant since acid exposure often calls for immediate emergency response. OSHA 29 CFR 1910.145 covers accident-prevention signs and tags. Specific acids may have their own OSHA standards under Subpart Z.
Should acid warning signs be placed near emergency eyewash and shower stations?
Yes. The acid warning sign goes where acids are handled. The eyewash station should be within ten seconds of travel from those same areas, clearly marked, and unobstructed. Workers need to find both quickly when something goes wrong.
Are these signs required even when acids are in sealed containers?
Yes. Sealed containers can leak, get dropped, or be opened by someone who does not know what is inside. The sign communicates the hazard before any of that happens.
Do these signs cover both liquid acids and acid vapors or fumes?
The sign addresses the presence of acid. If the acids in your facility also produce hazardous vapors, that should be reflected in additional signage or on the same sign. Check the SDS for each acid to understand the vapor hazard and make sure your signage covers it.
What size options are available?
The signs come in different sizes. Some common sizes for hazard signs are 3.5" x 5", 5" x 7", 7" x 10", 10" x 14" These sizes ensure that the signs are visible and easy to read. These signs need to be big enough to grab people's attention and small enough to fit in the space available.
